Hardwood vs. Luxury Vinyl Plank: Which Floor Is Right for Your Georgia Home?

July 8, 2026 Padilla Hardwood Flooring LLC

It's the question we hear at almost every estimate: should I put in real hardwood or luxury vinyl plank? Today's LVP looks remarkably like wood, so the decision comes down to how each floor behaves in the room you're putting it in.

Water is the biggest difference. Most LVP is fully waterproof — a spilled glass, a leaking dishwasher or a wet dog won't hurt it. Hardwood tolerates everyday spills if you wipe them up, but standing water and long-term moisture make boards cup and stain. That's why we usually recommend LVP for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and basements.

Wear works the other way over the long run. LVP has a factory wear layer that resists scratches very well, but once it's worn through it can't be renewed — you replace the planks. Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished several times over its life, so a floor that looks tired in fifteen years can look new again, often in a different color.

Value matters too. Hardwood is still what buyers in metro Atlanta expect in living rooms, dining rooms and primary bedrooms, and it adds more to a home's resale value. LVP usually costs less to buy and install, which makes it a smart choice for rentals and for large areas where budget matters.

Georgia's humidity affects both. Hardwood needs to acclimate before installation and needs proper expansion space, and both floors need a flat subfloor — LVP over a dip will flex and separate at the seams. Preparation is where a good installation is won or lost.

Many of our customers end up using both: hardwood in the main living areas and LVP in the kitchen, baths and basement, with clean transitions between them. If you're not sure, we'll bring samples to your free estimate and help you decide room by room. Call or text (678) 683-0638.
